TrackWell Software delivers Vessel Monitoring System to The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization

July 2001
TrackWell Software is pleased to announce an agreement with The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) on delivery of the TrackWell Vessel Monitoring System.
NAFO is an international organization whose object is to contribute through consultation and cooperation to the optimum utilization, rational management and conservation of the fishery resources of the Convention Area. The Convention Area comprises the waters of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean north of 35'00`N latitude and west of the line extending due north from 35'00`N latitude and 42'00`W longitude to 59'00N` latitude, thence due west to 44'00`W longitude, and thence due north to the coast of Greenland, and the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Davis Strait and Baffin Bay south of 78'00`N latitude.

Because of the immensity of the Convention Area and the delicacy of the biosphere it is particularly significant for NAFO and the contracting parties to monitor all vessel activity in the area thoroughly. In order to do so, NAFO has selected TrackWell´s Vessel Monitoring System.

The fishing vessels report information about their activities and position via satellite communication systems or by other applicable means, to their flag state Fisheries Monitoring Centre (FMC), which re-routes the information to NAFO. NAFO then re-distributes selected data to the Contracting Parties to improve inspections of the area.

The TrackWell VMS enables NAFO to receive, store and forward messages concerning the fishing vessels and warns the operator if the vessels activities do not confirm with the pre-set conditions for fishing. The TrackWell VMS also collects detailed data for NAFO concerning the vessels' entry into the area, the catch on board, transhipments, positions and exit. It furthermore verifies the integrity of the received data according to specified standards.
NAFO is also able to tabulate reports concerning activity and catch by species, areas, time frame, with the Contracting Parties.

"The prosperity of oceanic resources was for a long time assumed to be an unlimited gift of nature. Today´s considerations of commercial fisheries, however, include responsible utilization of oceanic resources and precautionary approach to fishing, together with scientifical studies on environmental and ecological factors. Bearing that in mind it is crucial being able to monitor every activity in the Convention Area and our conclusion was that the TrackWell Vessel Monitoring System was the best choice available for that matter." Says NAFO´s Executive Secretary Mr. L. I. Chepel.

"This is yet another confirmation for TrackWell Software that we are on the right track in developing outstanding monitoring software, since international organisations like NAFO, with their strict requirements on functionality, performance and reliability, are deciding on our system. " says Agust Einarsson, CEO of TrackWell Software. "Additional confirmations have furthermore occurred recently from NEAFC (The North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission), as well as from the Icelandic and the Faroe Islands authorities, that have been relying on the TrackWell Vessel Monitoring System in recent years"
