A majority of the company's employees has been working
for years on research, design and development of positioning,
telecommunications and computer technology and the use of
such technology for remote monitoring. Among the systems
developed by the group are Radar Data Processing and Displaying
Systems for the Icelandic Civil Aviation Administration,
an Automatic Reporting System for vessels and Vessel Monitoring
Systems for international fisheries authorities.
TrackWell Software was established in the spring of 1996.
Over the past three years, the company has focused on completing
the development of a public tracking system capable of working
with different telecommunications systems, handling great
quantities of data from vehicles and displaying the data
on different user interfaces or sending warnings or data
to various devices. This work has created a unique knowledge
base and products that are unique in the world.
The automatic reporting system, used, e.g., in Iceland
for monitoring of the entire Icelandic fishing fleet, is
of particular interest and is reputedly the largest vessel
or vehicle monitoring system in the world today. The knowledge
amassed during development of the radar data processing
system has been put to good use in this development work
and other development work in progress at TrackWell, e.g.,
on various real-time systems for the private and corporate
market, whose users number in the hundreds of thousands,
perhaps millions.
The company possesses a strong knowledge base of the technology
in which it specialises. The domestic market has been important
to the company and will continue to be important in the
testing and operating of software and development of business
plans. Iceland enjoys a special position in the GSM world,
with more than 70% penetration, which is among the highest
in the world. The country also has a diverse variety of
other telecommunications systems, e.g., NMT, two TETRA systems,
a TDMA system, as well as being in the footprint of various
satellite systems (Inmarsat, Argos, Globalstar, Orbcom).
All the key employees of the company have participated in
this extensive development and are now laying the foundation
for further development of the company. The vast majority
of the staff has a university education and expert knowledge
in the fields of telecommunications and software.
